Dimension X, which debuted in 1950, was well scripted and well acted, a contrast to earlier attempts to present the genre. You will recognize many of the titles as works of Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbuy and other popular science fiction writers of the era. Please let us know if you enjoy Dimension X, and if you would like to see other programs of this type.MEET CORLISS ARCHEROne of the latest series to be offered at GoldenOTR is Meet Corliss Archer, a longtime favorite.
The program was heard on all three major networks at one time or another during its thirteen year run (1943-56), and was one of the few series to last until the latter part of the decade
Corliss, played for most of the show's run by Janet Waldo, is a perky, pretty fifteen year old who is always optimistic and has a rosy outlook on life, even though her best laid plans usually go awry.
In the 50s, the series was also presented on television. The best of these episodes starred Ann Baker as Corlis and aired during the 1955-56 season.
We hope you enjoy these episodes of Meet Corliss Archer. Please feel free to let us know what you think!TRADING POST NOW OPENThe OTR Trading Post is now open and ready for business. Millions of American families gathered around the big wooden box in the parlor each evening to enter a magic world of comedy, drama, music and sports.
The popularity of radio skyrocketed in the years following the establishment of the first commercial station, KDKA in Pittsburgh, in 1920. This pioneer, originally Amateur Station 8XK, came to the airwaves on 2 November 1920 to broadcast the presidential election between Warren Harding and James Cox. By 1922, more than one million radio sets were in use in the United States.
During the first decade of the Golden Age of Radio, the 1920s, the most popular programs were sponsored musical performances. However, by the time America crawled into the Depression years of the 30s, the broadcast industry has discovered comedy, drama, sports and more.
The advent of radio comedy did much to help desperate Americans turn there minds away from their troubles during those hard times.
Radio continued to rule the living rooms of America until television, which was delayed by World War II, caught on in the 1950s and took America by storm.
In recent years, people have begun to rediscover the joy of old time radio. In many ways, listening to the old programs might be considered more 'cerebral' than watching television because the listener has to use the imagination to visualize the action.
In any case, it is fortunate that so many episodes of the old shows still exist the delight yet another generation .
